Short&Sweet: no tutus in sight

Revealing contemporary dance to Montrealers is a short yet sweet experience when organized by Wants&Needs; a company created by contemporary dance choreographers Sasha Kleinplatz and Andrew Tay.

Maybe you’re one of those people who enjoys the performing arts, but are embarrassed to attend classical ballet because you’ll find yourself scratching your head – or worse, yawning – after only twenty minutes? Well, have we got a nutcracking experience for you! Think you can tolerate three minutes of choreography?

Short&Sweet is an innovative concept that may be appropriate for those who suffer from chronic ADD, but there is certainly more to it than simple time constraints. This well-established event offers an unintimidating space for the Montreal dance community to get together, perform and push the limits of their creativity. After all, they only have a couple minutes to shine.

Performers don’t need to hand in their resumes; they get carte blanche to put together whatever they want while making sure to keep it under three minutes. This accessible yet challenging idea was put forward to give an opportunity to those artists who do not meet the standards of traditional companies to showcase their talents.

Some of the choreographers who have participated in Short&Sweet have included former NIGHTLIFE.CA cover girls and boy Dana Michel, Andrew Tay and Sasha Kleinplatz, as well as Namchi Bazaar, Thea Patterson, Katie Ward, Peter Trosztmer, Audrey Juteau, Frédérick Gravel, Marie Beland, Katie Ewald, Silvy Panet-Raymond (co-founder of Espace Tangente) and the Solid State Breakdance Collective, among many others.

For its sixth anniversary, this new version of Short&Sweet at the FTA’s headquarters will offer an even less threatening environment for dancers around Montreal to get to know one another and share their vision.
