OSM & MUTEK: Orchestral Manoeuvres

Culture twists and turns: inside out, upside down, in and out of time. Classical music and techno may seem worlds apart but they’re increasingly coming together: Warp collaborating with the London Sinfonietta and Ryuichi Sakamoto’s Discord, for instance. (And we’re not even talking sampling here, the motherload of classic/contemporary crossover.)

Montreal gets a taste of the new wave of classical collaboration when the Montreal Symphony Orchestra teams up with MUTEK for what promises to be a very interesting evening. The night starts with conductor Kent Nagano tweaking and bowing expectations with a contemporary classical composition for seven cellos, Messagequisse by Boulez, and Mahler’s Titan symphony. Then Berlin’s Thomas Fehlmann (The Orb, Sun Electric, Palais Schaumburg) presents his own interpretation of Titan, an experimental version combining knob twiddling, button pushing and classical musicians.

Techno duo Scion round out the eclectic bill and the whole evening is wrapped in Montreal creator Jean-Sebastien Baillat’s decor.
