Mon Nan: crouching hunger, hidden dragon
Recently relocated to the corner of de la Gauchetière and St-Dominique, Mon Nan is a fine spot to grab anything from lunch to late night eats.

They have sheets of paper and pencils, so you can write your order number down. That nutty-tasting, reassuring tea is in your grasp within seconds of your arrival. The tables are covered in many layers of grocery bag plastic, waiting to be stripped for the next half-cut punter. There are big fish circling around inset aquariums, almost begging to be eaten. And, oh yes, there are golden dragons. Industrial carpeting, too. The platters are big, ideal for sharing. And it’s open late. Real late.

The food’s nothing to sniff at, but it’s nothing to sneer at either. And they’ve got that wicked hot sauce on the table, ready to squirt. The staff is helpful and unobtrusive. Very reasonable prices, I might add. This is a prime specimen of night-time Chinatown. It’s ideal for a big group of friends, looking for good eats to cap off a night of merriment.

The chicken with black bean sauce I ate was decent, and they gave me orange slices after my meal. They were really sweet oranges.
