Critiques CD: High Tone | Out Back

A double LP of big phat dubstep and genre hip-hopping from France’s High Tone production team. On the deeply reggae infused dub step of the opening track “Spank,” female vocals weave in Middle Eastern influences. On “Dirty Urban Beat,” bass as hard as a diamond-tipped jackhammer rivets you to the dancefloor with nail-gun force while the breaks and interludes bring the bounce. Divided into “Dub Axiom” and “No Border,” High Tone aren’t afraid to lean towards hip-hop populism or veer into wobbly experimentalism. All basses get covered and this is not a bad thing at all. September 5th at Café Campus.
