Critiques CD: Gotye | Making Mirrors

Belgian-born Australian recording artist Wouter de Backer – better known as Gotye – has made waves with his latest album in 2011, now just reissued in Canada. The easy favorite, single “Somebody That I Used To Know”, took off like a rocket into cyberspace (the cover by Walk Off the Earth, which features 5 people playing one guitar, has over 35 million hits on Youtube). Regrettably, the eleven other tracks aren’t quite as noteworthy. While each song plays on a variety of stylistic references, too many miss the mark – like “In Your Light”, an array of the worst of the 1980s with its hand claps and kitschy Phil Collins-esque vocals.
