Critiques CD: Frivolous | Meteorology

This once-upon Montrealer, now exiled in Berlin, consistently delivers funky house soundscapes that are memorable in their understated loopiness. Meteorology offers more of his minimal, jazzified rhythms, taking us on an ethereal head trip that’s often both eerie and melancholy. “Cryin”’s faint mumbles over groovy 4X4 beats and subtle melodies spell dancefloor success, while “Lunar Phaser”‘s echoed chanting, gloomy chords and digital glitches keep things on the interesting end of experimental. Not an earth-shatteringly inventive disc – the last few tracks somewhat lack in the way of flavour – but there’s enough here to sustain repeated listens.
