Critiques CD: Akido | Gamechanger

Montreal’s Kim Gaboury is a busy boy, between running his label Nordique, doing remixes for the Adidas Originals campaign, and now releasing his third LP. It’s been a while since his last release and Gamechanger continues Blink’s aesthetic, mixing breathy pop songs and indie rock airs with the sort of orchestral, proggish electronic compositions that Quebecois and Germans seem particularly fond of. Akido manages to mix up some resoundingly commercial electropop songs, which are perfectly good enough and sure to be loved by some. To these ears, his talents are best applied to his more abstract journeys into sound, where dubstep meets Vangelis and other interesting intersections occur.
