Wellhouse: all’s well that ends well

Nestled in the heart of Westmount, Wellhouse offers up a cozy menu of classics, with a few twists. The ambiance is muted; the soundtrack seems to be intentionally forgettable, featuring Cat Stevens and Counting Crows-esque adult contemporary. The decor is equally mild-mannered, meaning there are no distractions from the food. And who can blame them? The food speaks for itself – salmon tartare with yuzu, turkey poutine, fresh fig and raspberry tartlets with berry coulis and creme anglaise and, of course, pulled pork sandwiches.

The menu itself is somewhat too understated; an order of gnocchi unexpectedly featured chicken (vegetarians, beware!). Nonetheless, we were won over by the friendliness of the staff, and their excitement about new menu items, not to mention the quality of the dishes sampled. The daily specials really go above and beyond the menu, featuring seasonal and local ingredients in innovative ways.

Wellhouse attracts a diverse crowd: from middle-aged couples on dinner dates to polo-shirted twenty-somethings drinking pints and eating appetizers. The drink menu is as varied as the clientele – revamped cocktails featuring organic soda, draft beer and an extensive wine list. All in all, a Wellhouse is a good thing to have in your hood.
