Beach House: Afloat On a Sea of Love
Something is about to change in a very big way for the Baltimore dream pop duo known as Beach House. Victoria Legrand, the chanteuse/organist and niece to French film composer Michel Legrand, and multi-instrumentalist Alex Scally have just dropped their much desired third album Teen Dream, and many more people will now be paying attention.

The new record is their first for indie behemoth Sub Pop (Legrand likens their relationship with the label to a “natural climb”, more so than to a jump, from their previous imprint Carpark), and with a larger outreach comes larger expectations and a more refined focus. “That’s definitely something that’s appealing as an artist because you want to grow and you want to spread your art,” says Legrand. “I think that (Teen Dream) will be much like the other records, where it seems like it’s going to be a little crazy, but…actually…it will be much more fathomable or natural. I think it’s just something about our music.”

The music – dark, deep, hazy slow grooves anchored by Legrand’s smoky vocals and Alex Scally’s subtle arrangements and quiet six-string pickings. Teen Dream marks a noticeable sonic change, sounding remarkably upbeat. “We did not want to move away from that darker sound. I think if anything, what happened was that we toured so much, we played live so much, that we were searching for this kind of energy, and it wasn’t about getting less dark,” Legrand intones. “Sonically, we wanted things to feel more vibrant …there’s more of a hi-fi feeling than a lo-fi feeling. We really wanted people to feel the sounds, and not feel like everything was in the distance or super-soaked in reverb.”

On The Road Again

Since the group’s earliest inklings, they have made it a priority to take their two-person show on the road, spreading their holiest music to the four corners of the world. With the release of Teen Dream, this has only intensified. A heavy touring schedule was launched in January, taking Beach House on a new round of aural adventures. “We’re actually really excited about touring. Both of us now, we feel really comfortable when we’re in constant motion,” mentions Legrand. “It feels more normal to be in an airport, or in the van with your crap everywhere.

It feels abnormal when you get back to Baltimore and you haven’t seen your friends in a month, but that happens over and over again, and you have to remember that all anyone does in this town is drink!” Ultimately though, despite numerous superficial changes, this is still the same band many have come to love and cherish.

“Alex and I have always had control over everything and been DIY, literally up until this (past) summer. In the sense we didn’t have a manager, we never had anybody doing anything for us. We were very much touring ourselves, doing everything ourselves, doing t-shirts by ourselves. No one was wiping our asses.” Amen sister.
