British band The Heavy bring back their rock solid funk to Montreal

The Heavy’s latest and second album is a mighty, mighty wall of sound that demands to be played loud.

A juggernaut driven by massively dense, catchy, headbanging guitar riffs and deep, deep soul, The Glorious Dead puts pedal to the metal and tears up Route 66, burning down the highway as The Heavy speed through the rural blues and R&B on their way to Rock City. This album is built on a solid foundation of catchy songwriting, monster guitar riffs and deep bluesy soul, with layers and layers of horns and strings piled high and heavy courtesy of The Dap-Kings (Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones) on about half the tracks (including the hardcore “Just My Luck”).

The Heavy travel the distance, even if they’re all over the musical map they bring it together with a sack full of catchy hooks, big breaks and musical finesse. Papa’s got a brand new bag and it’s full of rock guitars and souls to be saved. From tracks like “Lonesome Road,” which evokes Tom Waits, to the hardcore punk soul styling of “Just My Luck,” they make history their bitch. Then there’s “What Makes A Good Man,” where rock and soul meet in a moment of pure musical bliss. Think Sly & The Family Stone meet Pearl Jam with the occasional gospel choir thrown in and a whole mess of heaviness, and then forget it all and just get into The Heavy.

The Glorious Dead is indeed glorious but it’s very viscerally alive and The Heavy kick out the jams with a passion and fury that’s irresistible. Surrender to the hooks and heaviness, you won’t regret it.
