Critiques CD: Addison Groove | Transistor Rhythm

Addison Groove (born Antony Williams, a.k.a. dubstep producer Headhunter) leans heavily into some fleshed out juke-based beats on his debut LP. Beefier and denser than the minimalism of homegrown juke, with some serious synthetic African/house polyrhythms and techno dancing in these grooves, Transistor Rhythms turns the dial until it reaches stoopidly brilliant (with some, um, lyrical help from Spank Rock). One of the things I love about ghetto-pure juke is how similar it is to early, raw hip-hop (such as Schoolly D) – Addison Groove takes inspiration from that raw electro aesthetic and pimps it up for a wickedly sophisticated ride. Addictive.
