Dirty Beaches: ex-Montrealer is riding his first waves of acclaim
Dirty Beaches is Alex Zhang Hungtai, a musical nomad who was born in Taiwan and has called Montreal, Honolulu, Toronto and now East Vancouver his home.

Our own tiny Fixture Records first introduced the world to his singular music, a murky, lo-lo-fi ball of fractured beauty that encompasses minimalist rock, electronics, punk, ghostly beats, doo-wop and now wave. Dirty Beaches goes it alone in the studio and on the stage, an able multi-instrumentalist, gearhead and vocalist at ease with a guitar, piano, keys and synths.

To his name are dozens of small-print recordings and most recently fans across North America witnessed him first-hand as support for buzz-bin band Dum Dum Girls. All the attention is warranted though. No one is doing what he’s doing today. He’s got the balls to tackle reverb-drenched covers of classic crooners (inspired in part by his performer father), so be prepared to fall under the spell of Dirty Beaches.
