Critiques CD: Black Devil Disco Club | Circus

The legend goes that Bernard Fevre’s debut blazed dark electronic trails back in 1978, being unearthed and rediscovered by Aphex Twin in early 2000. The high gothic new-wave of Circus stays true to its dark retro roots with some remarkable guest vocalists providing appropriately breathy, dramatically intoned vocals. Jon Spencer (of the Blues Explosion) channels Bauhaus, Nancy Fortune invokes Nina Hagen, while Nancy Sinatra and Afrika Bambaataa summon dance floor demons. The music and lyrics on Circus are arch and completely over the top, creating a noire new-wave that’s ironically dandified in a way that few newer new-wave acts manage to capture.
