Friday Nocturnes at the MAC: Percussion and Art Discussion
Friday Nocturnes return to the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC), February 4th for an eclectic night of music and art full of local talent.

The series kicks off with a percussion-oriented show, as the pounding rhythms of four female musicians overtake the once silent space of the museum. Joannie Labelle, of acts Wop-Pow-Wow, Blandilo and Meinl Percussion, joins Maloukaï percussionists Anne-Marie Kirouac, Marise Demers and Isabelle Delaney for an all Montreal accompaniment to the raucous harmonies of primal art-rocker Alexander Ortiz (aka We Are Ortiz), vocalist and bassist of the acclaimed group We Are Wolves and the newly formed Claass.

As if all this aural stimulation wasn’t enough, the projections of Montreal video artist Ian Cameron (visual director of the soulful, nature-loving experimental musicians The National Parcs and regular collaborator with We Are Wolves), joins in the fun, enveloping the night’s beats in trippy visuals, as might be expected at a museum of contemporary art.

The music performance will be simulcast live on two screens, next to the bar (yes, bar!) and on the exhibition gallery level, with visitors welcome downstairs, as well, to meet visual artist Kevin Schmidt and discover his video work Epic Journey (2010) in the multimedia room. Schmidt’s notorious flare for media displacement comes to the forefront as the film portrays all 11 ½ hours of the Lord of the Rings trilogy being projected in transit as a boat floats down B.C.’s Fraser River.

Admission with regular Museum ticket ($10 adults, $6 Students) or $15 Wired card (entrance for a year).
