Summertime in Paris: extreme paintings by extreme artists

Mannequins made out of hair, a woman with a cat head and a melted Darth Vader mask are some of the art works you can expect at the next Parisian Laundry exhibit. Those quirky pieces are part of Summertime in Paris – Extreme Painting, a show that is held at the St-Henri gallery until August 28th.

For more than 9 years now, this contemporary art hideout has presented the work of burgeoning international artists,  building along the way a first-rate reputation in the Canadian art realm. This summer, the maestro behind the gallery, Jeannie Riddle, has chosen more than 15 artists to be showcased in her old laundromat’s Galerie 1 and Bunker spaces. Her goal is to demonstrate how paint can be used in 2D and 3D contexts to its full artistic potential.

Innovative artists like Quebec City’s BGL will present their creations. BGL will show mash-ups of everyday objects and nature, such as a wooden briefcase with a pop-up tree, while Julie Lefort will present her latest colourful oil paintings. Moreover, the recent acquisition of the Tedeschi collection will reunite the likes of Lotte Geeven, an installation and drawing master with Reinaldo Sanguino, a New Yorker exploring the limits of mixed media and sculptures.

This melting-pot of talent is a perfect glimpse of what artists have in store for the coming decade in contemporary art.
