Kode9
No stranger to dedicated Montreal dubsteppers, Kode9 returns with a bag full of badass bass. Founder of the Hyperdub label, Kode9 brings the big bounce and even bigger, deeper bass when he performs at Ghislain “El” Poirier’s third edition of Karnival. With a PhD in philosophy and a book titled Sonic Warfare, Steve Goodman (a.k.a. Kode9) is the master of dancefloor devastation of the best possible kind.

Gil Scott Heron

Plants and Animals
Continuing the festival’s tradition of showcasing new acts as part of the evolution of jazz, P&A play the first show of the Rythmes Bell series. Two years after the pastoral-themed indie hit album Parc Avenue, the Montreal trio return fresh off their 2010 follow-up release, La La Land.

Staff Benda Bilili
With the spotlight shining brightly on the streets of Khinshasa since the worldwide explosion of Konono no. 1, others were sure to follow. Welcome to the wild world of Staff Benda Bilili: paraplegic street musicians who add some bounce to their bump, in a sound world where West Africa and Latin America hold hands.

Rakim
Rakim, a.k.a. the God M.C., changed rap lyricism forever with his scientific delivery. Generations of younger rhyme spitters later, there’s still nothing like his first verse on "Microphone Fiend" and there may never will be. Listen closely, read between the lines, and you will learn why the man is considered a rap legend.

Think About Life

Wanda Jackson

!!! (chk chk chk)
All has been quiet on the Western front for Brooklyn’s !!! (chk chk chk). Myth Takes, released in 2007, saw the sextet push the limits of their space groove to new heights, a polished mix of funk, punk, soul, and Afrocentric rhythms. Tragedy struck last November with the death of their drummer, but this summer sees !!! return to their favorite hot spot…the stage.

The Aggrolites
