Critiques CD: Felix Cartal | Popular Music

Felix ‘‘king of the epic buildup’’ Cartal hits us real good on his debut LP; packing a mighty arsenal of hard house basslines, wonky loops, shrieking synths and distorted melodies. The B.C. bandit’s eponymous album opener is a delectable ravey heavy-hitter. From there on, Cartal tacks on the dirtiest four-on-the-floor patterns and the wonkiest thumps. “Love” is a progressive tech assault with a fine soupcon of melody, and “Dutch George” is tribal house turned-glitchy-tech banger care of a delirious build-up. This guy is a dream beat weaver, and his work with MSTRKRFT, Acid Kids and Dragonette only affirm the soon-to-be Cartal gospel’s talent and the followers that will ensue.
